Somatic Awareness - Body Authority

In this course we will work with grounding, centering, relaxation, and boundaries in both solo and partner work.

Based on techniques of martial arts pushing/sticking hands, partner drills create an artificial environment of conflict, of a relationship in danger of tipping out of balance. Where is our inner fight? How do we react and relate to this both internally and externally?

The fundament of this work is to have access to resources for being able to be present within your own body. The goal is relaxing any excess tension that is not needed, creating an opening for flow (both physical and emotional), and activating what is needed to be alert and adaptable. Excess tension creates a stop to flow (a rigid body authority) and too little contact with the body challenges the ability to be present (lack of body authority).

In this partner work, we have the opportunity to become aware of patterns of dominance and submission, lack of skills in self-assertion and boundaries, negative self-talk, and consequences of unresolved traumas. This shows us where we must work to step into our own body authority.

Confronted with our psychological defenses we often need to work through the shame and break the cycle of rejecting functional self-assertion. How do we accept and integrate an authentic display?

This method is a practice of self-awareness and development. The goal is to recognize our communication patterns and become more receptive listeners and clearer communicators.
